The Illumina Respiratory Virus Enrichment Kit, formerly known as the Respiratory Virus Oligo Panel (RVOP), provides an effective, streamlined method for detecting common respiratory viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and influenza A/B.

Target enrichment for respiratory virus detection

Target enrichment through the hybrid–capture method allows for highly sensitive detection without requiring the high read depth needed for shotgun metagenomic sequencing. Additionally, this method allows for dramatically larger probe panels for comprehensive profiling compared to amplicon sequencing while producing whole-genome sequencing data for the targeted viruses.

Illumina Respiratory Virus Enrichment Kits contain the Respiratory Virus Oligo Panel (RVOP) v2, Illumina RNA Prep with Enrichment, and one of four available unique dual indexing plates. To run 384 samples at once, order all four sets (A, B, C, and D). Additional Illumina reagents required include an Illumina sequencer and the appropriate sequencing reagents and flow cell(s).

Highly sensitive SARS-CoV-2 detection

In a titration experiment of human saliva RNA spiked with a defined amount of virus copies, the Illumina Respiratory Virus Enrichment Kit resulted in detection of viral reads from as low as two copies of SARS-CoV-2 viral RNA.
