Stuart Cordwell, PhD, Professor of Analytical Biochemistry at the University of Sydney and Director of Sydney Mass Spectrometry, presents an overview of how mass spectrometry (MS) has served as a cornerstone post genome technology for multi omics analysis, including proteomics and metabolomics, and why complementary approaches are increasingly important for clinical research. Drawing on work from Sydney Mass Spectrometry, which supports over 250 research groups across a wide range of biological and small molecule applications, Professor Cordwell describes a growing shift among clinicians from genomics and transcriptomics toward proteomics, alongside a perceived technical barrier to MS based workflows. The presentation introduces Illumina Protein Prep, a standardized and reproducible proteomics platform surveying approximately 9,500 proteins using SOMAmer based capture with an NGS readout. Preliminary comparative studies performed alongside parallel LC MS/MS based proteomics are shared, along with the application of this approach to a larger clinical study. Together, the data highlight how affinity based proteomics and mass spectrometry can be highly complementary, enabling scalable biomarker discovery and translational research while “speaking the language” of NGS familiar clinical researchers.
