Sustainable efforts reduce Illumina’s environmental footprint

Last week in New York City, the 2019 United Nations Climate Action Summit brought together worldwide key representatives from governments, the private sector, civil society, local authorities and other international organizations to create solutions to fight climate change such as reducing CO2 emissions. The latest scientific information indicates that global net COemissions must fall by 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.*

Bloom Energy provides innovative technology solutions for power generation that align with corporate social responsibility and help reduce environmental footprint. Based on its proprietary solid oxide fuel cell technology, Bloom Energy Servers convert fuel, hydrogen or biogas into electricity through an electrochemical process without combustion at the highest efficiency of any power solution available in the world today. Each Energy Server produces 200 to 300 kilowatts of power in a footprint roughly equivalent to that of a parking spot.

As a biotech leader, Illumina has a keen understanding of the connection between the environment and human health. Bloom Energy is proud to work with companies like Illumina on their social responsibility efforts that better the health of our planet for the health of its people.

“The Bloom Energy Server platform provides us an innovative solution that will supply Illumina’s campus with on-site power generation that is both efficient and environmentally friendly, “ said Sam Samad, Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at Illumina. “This installation highlights one of the many actions Illumina is taking to reduce our environmental footprint as part of our broader commitment to ensuring that Illumina is a responsible corporate citizen.”

Illumina completed the installation of Bloom Energy Servers to continue its mission of sustainability and efficiency. The installation of a 3.5-megawatt Bloom Energy fuel cell system at the Illumina headquarters is the most recent step the company has taken to be strong environmental stewards.   Illumina’s Corporate Social Responsibility vision is to deepen our impact on human health by serving as a champion for patients, the community, and our planet.  Through the installation of the on-site power system, Illumina is investing in cleaner technologies resulting in a reduced environmental footprint. The installation is expected to reduce Illumina’s impact by as much as 8 million pounds of CO2 and 540 million gallons of water per year compared to the U.S. grid. The amount of COemissions reduced through the use of the new, clean power system is equal to planting over 2,000 acres of forest in the U.S. or leaving 213,285 gallons of gasoline unused.

“As a biotech leader, Illumina has a keen understanding of the connection between the environment and human health,” said John Reuter, Vice President of Western Region, Bloom Energy. “Bloom Energy is proud to work with companies like Illumina on their social responsibility efforts that better the health of our planet for the health of its people.”
