Officially launched on the 29 August 2024 by the Malaysian Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, The Honorable Chang Lih Kang and the Minister of Health, The Honorable Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad, the MyGenom project is Malaysia’s large national genome project that aims to sequence 10,000 Malaysian genomes (2,400 genomes in Phase 1) and generate a reference genome for the country.

“Genomics is a critical part of public health, from characterizing new and emerging pathogens to revolutionizing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.” said Gretchen Weightman, Illumina’s Senior Vice President of the Asia-Pacific, Middle East & Africa region. “Through our most powerful sequencer ever - NovaSeqTM X Plus, we look forward to accelerating the MyGenom project and supporting the ministries’ goal to sequence more genomes and identify genes involved in both rare and common diseases.

Greater diversity in genomics can provide valuable insights into health disparities and human biology. Population genome studies promotes diversity in genomic research and mitigates inequalities. They are shown to:

  • Improve population health outcomes through optimize treatment and prevention programs
  • Lower healthcare costs through accurate diagnosis and effective treatment strategies
  • Create a thriving genomics ecosystem.

“Successful population genome research requires a synergistic effort among government bodies, medical institutions, and a diverse array of experts, including medical professionals, researchers, geneticists, scientists, and bioinformaticians. The MyGenom project stands as a prime example of this collaborative excellence.” said Ben Foong, General Manager of ScienceVision.

The NovaSeqTM X Plus can generate more than 20,000 whole genomes per year – 2.5 times the throughput of prior sequencers. With NovaSeq X Plus, we redesigned every single aspect of a sequencer, creating a machine with unprecedented speed, scale and accuracy and pushing the limits on what is possible with genetic sequencing. With these advancements, NovaSeq X Plus will dramatically accelerate the pace for life-saving scientific discoveries, understanding disease, and transforming patient lives.

“Illumina and ScienceVision are trusted technology partners with demonstrated leadership and a proven track record of genomics solutions. We offer reliable, industry-leading training, support and services. Our vision is to partner with governments and academia to realize value of genomics in healthcare and industry innovation,” Ms Weightman said.
